Michael Hutchence went on a drug and alcohol fuelled rampage following a row with Bob Geldof then hanged himself. The singer’s last desperate hours of his life have been revealed for the first time by two detectives who led the investigation into his death. Ex-cops Michael Gerondis and and Mark Smith said the INXS star, who committed suicide at Sydney’s Ritz-Carlton hotel 16 years ago, had a deep, infected, cigarette burn on his finger which “went down to the bone”. Hutchence, 47, and girlfriend Paula Yates had been locked in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband Bob Geldof over Yates’ girls Peaches, Pixie and Fifi. On 22 November 1997 Hutchence rowed with Geldof on the phone as the Boomtown Rat refused to let Hutchence and Yates’ 16-month-old daughter Tiger Lily spend Christmas in Australia. The Daily Mirror newspaper goes on Afterwards the drunken rocker desperately searched a bin in his hotel room for cocaine. But when he found none, rang his agent and said: “I’ve had enough.” The lyrics to the last song the distraught star penned were also found screwed up in the bin. He then ran a bath before hanging himself with a belt on the door, where he was found at 11.50am the next day. Gerondis told Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph: “The maid could not get in because he was behind the door and as she pushed the door the belt snapped and he fell down. Poor maid.” Hutchence’s inquest found he had killed himself while on drugs and in a depressed state. But Gerondis said Yates refused to accept the verdict, insisting he had died in a sex game by accident. Yates died from a heroin overdose in 2000 and Tiger was adopted by Geldof. Hutchence’s brother Rhett, 51 has told how well Bob has brought up Tiger Lily. He said: “She’s a real credit to Bob, he’s done a great job with her.
